choroidal melanoma. The initial ultrasonographic characteristics suggestive of a melanoma include the collar-button shape, low internal reflectivity, and moderate vascularity. The reduction in lesion thickness and change from lowmedium to medium internal reflectivity on A-scan examination across time argue against a melanoma. Whereas the collar-button shape is characteristic of a melanoma, other lesions such as choroidal metastases and disciform processes can have this configuration. We presume that the sizable preretinal fibrosis accounts for the vascularity seen on ultrasonography, and the membrane size explains the diffuse rather than expected focal nature of the vascularity. Although the long duration of the vitreous hemorrhage argues against a melanoma, the clinical picture was complicated by the use of warfarin. The dense vitreous hemorrhage seen initially as well as the changing characteristics on serial ultrasonographic examinations helped determine the ultimate diagnosis and guided the physicians in avoiding unwanted treatment.

tures of keratic precipitates during intraocular inflammation. To our knowledge, the use of IVCM to describe conjunctival pathological characteristics has not previously been reported. The human conjunctiva is an excellent tissue to examine using the confocal microscope because it is semitranslucent and the underlying vessels and cellular structures are easily accessible. The histopathological ...
متن کاملVariations of the Normal Human Limbal Stem Cells Detected by In Vivo Confocal Microscopy
Background To report normal variations of the limbal structures using in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy. Methods: This was a retrospective study of fourteen eyes from 11 healthy individuals. Confocal imaging of cornea and limbus was performed using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph III Rostock Corneal Module. Results: The typical structure of the palisades of Vogt (POV) was detected ...

PURPOSE To elucidate the status of the conjunctival inflammation in atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) using laser scanning confocal microscopy and compare the relevant findings with conjunctival brush cytology in a prospective controlled study. METHODS Twenty eyes from 20 AKC patients as well as 16 eyes from 16 age and sex matched normal subjects were studied. The subjects underwent tear film...

PURPOSE The study was conducted to analyze, by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), the conjunctival epithelial characteristics in untreated ocular hypertension (OH) and in topically treated primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS The study included 30 eyes affected with untreated OH, 96 eyes with POAG receiving medical therapy, and 15 healthy control eyes. The main outcome measures were t...

PURPOSE To investigate the cytologic findings of superior bulbar conjunctiva in superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) using laser scanning confocal microscopy and impression cytology in a prospective controlled study. METHODS Twenty-one eyes of 11 SLK patients (9 women, 2 men; mean age, 49.3 +/- 17.9 years) and 18 eyes of 9 control subjects (6 women, 3 men; mean age, 46.4 +/- 8.7 years) ...
